That's in the introduction, and that's pretty much the tone for this book. Opinions are rare in the sanctified world of "Doctor Who" journalism, yet Mark Campbell thrives on it.
This is essentially (pun intended) a list of every "Who" story in such bite-sized chunks that even an M&M would seem a cheek-bursting mouthful. Campbell's wisely eschewed the senseless synopses and humdrum production rundowns, concentrating (in a three-second kinda way) on Cast, Influences, Observation and Verdict. The author's preferences seem to be with the show's more pantomimically self-mocking moments and some judgements will leave you open-mouthed, yet strangely admiring of the gall of any person that would give "Timelash" four out of five.
Buy it especially for the introduction. Anyone precious enough about "Doctor Who" will be warned immediately and will probably leave the building after slamming it down and muttering something about "David Howe" and "God" in the same sentence. It's a hilarious intro, full of cynical asides and pointed accusations. After the three pages we know where his love lies and we know who's targeted in his personal stretching rack.
Irreverence dominates, yet Campbell declares his unfathomable love for this most silly of shows. For a book so potentially flimsy and throwaway, he's managed to produce something rare and elusive - a genuinely essential new "Doctor Who" book.
